Art is an expression of feeling. As we explore and understand the expression of feelings, we realize that man has many ways of expressing himself. Music, for example, is a common form of art that reflects man’s ability to experience, express, and share his feelings. Composers have to feel, and then translate that feeling into sound. But how do you do this? How do you capture another person’s emotions and put them on canvas?
In a museum, people flock to the art, but do they have motives? Many of us are afraid to ask about art, mainly because we know what everyone is thinking. We are afraid of making an awkward conversation with someone who does not know anything about art. Hence, art is not for everyone. Art can be beautiful and peaceful, and yet it can stir up deep and powerful emotions in different people. However, not all art is created equal.
In spite of these challenges, many classical definitions of art are useful tools for understanding art. However, they do not stand alone in terms of philosophical or historical context. The concepts that make up most definitions of art are embedded in general philosophical theories. These theories include traditional metaphysics and epistemology, which are prime examples of conceptually confused language. Because of this, we must be cautious when reading them. Even though they are useful and informative, they are also potentially misleading.
It is difficult to define the nature of art in the absence of aesthetic qualities. But there are several aspects that can help us identify art. For instance, a purely aesthetic definition of art would include the way the viewer experiences the art. There are many artists who create art, but not all of them can be described as “aesthetic.”
In the classical definition, art refers to the creation of something of beauty. However, craftmen create things that serve purely functional purposes. This distinction makes some types of craftsmanship seem undistinguishable from genuine art. A cartoonist-animator, for example, creates thousands of identical pictures of cartoon characters. However, his art is commercial and he is not really an artist. If you consider the work of an artist as art, you should realize that it is a very complex process and that it is incredibly difficult to make a definitive assessment.
An earlier cluster theorist called Weitz characterized art by defining the work as belonging to a specific category, and then offered a list of seven properties. This list aimed to capture the essence of art but was ultimately insufficient. Whether art is a work of art is irrelevant if it cannot be defined by a simple definition. If it is, then art cannot be defined in terms of its content. For this reason, art has no intrinsic value.
Institutionalism is another way to describe art. Historically, it has been argued that the definition of art is socio-cultural and institutional. However, this definition has changed in recent years. The work of art is an artifact conferred by the artworld. It may even be a work of art that involves a specific person. It must also be presented to an artworld audience. It is important to recognize that art is a social construct, and that it is not just a collection of images.
